nerf tube steps

Hi, I have a 2004 Tacoma and would like to install some nerf bar steps. I've looked at several brands on the net and decided to go with chrome plated (probably stainless steel). When mounted, I want them to be high and close to the body so the visual effect won't be a big thing hanging way out on the side of the truck displaying a lot of the support hardware. A big (heavy duty looking) tube would be fine, but it should be close to the body. More for protecting the rocker panels, than for its use as a step. Does anyone have experience with brands that would mount in a way that would give the look I'm after? Thanks, Mark

I have Westin tubes on my Tundra. Look nice, but don't overpower the look of the truck.

If they are going to be close up to body, they are going to offer little to no protection. They will most likely bend the first time you put any load on them, flexing into the rocker and creating damage, although granted it will be cleaner smoother damage than whatever you were hitting...

I went with the weld on skids from Bentup

Very adjustable. Mine are as you say- "high and tight". Great bars!

Bought mine locally in N. Illinois, but a web search quickly found this site and they appear to be a little less than I paid.

I got SMITTYBUILT bars and are very happy with them. I've had them for about 3 years and they look just as good as they did when they were new. I got the stainless steel ones instead of chrome because I wasn't interested in having the chrome chip off.
