No Start for a 1994 Toyota 4Runner - Battery or Alt?

I have a 1994 Toyota 4Runner, 3vze engine with 4wd and a manual trans. Lately I've been having some trouble starting the car. If i put the key in the ignition an turn the car to the on position, all the dummy lights come on and the radio works. When i try to crank the engine nothing happens and all the electrical power in the vehicle switches off (ie no lights or stereo). After that the car can only be started with jumper cables. How can I tell if the battery is bad or the alternator isn't charging????

Sounds like the starter contacts are shot. But first you should clean the battery contacts well. See:

Remove the cables from the battery and clean the connections.

I recently had the starter rebuilt so I don't think that could be the problem.

how old is the battery? If it starts with jumper cables, there is nothing wrong with the starter.
