I was driving home last night and I noticed that my temp gauge was at
3/4 and going up. I pulled over and looked under the hood. There was no steam or smoke but I could hear a gurgling sound in the Rad and there was nothing in the reservoir. I waited about 20 minutes and drove home as I lived only around the block. The temp gauge never hit the red line.At first I thought it was the termostat. But as the engine reaches temperature the upper rad hose was warm/hot. And since the coolant was circulanting the water pump was working.
So I went to a local auto parts store in Toronto and picked up a new rad cap, long last coolant and oil. I added 2.5 litres of coolant and
3 litres of oil. I then drove it to work and it ran without issue. Tonight I will get a oil change and rad flush as I am sure some of the old coolant and oil got very hot and needs changing.I guess the rad cap was letting in air and thus lowered the boiling point of the coolant, causing the water to boil. As the temperature increased in the engine, oil started to be burned off. Until now, my truck never burned coolant or oil. But in the end, I was glad I was able to fix it myself :) In total it cost me $23 Canadian to fix.
