Parking brake sequence

What is the proper sequence to apply/release the parking brake and the transmission Park position? That is, should the parking brake be engaged before switching from Drive to Park?

When parking on a hill you would want to apply the parking brake before shifting to park. When you are ready to drive the vehicle again shift to drive before releasing the parking brake. When parking on a level surface it shouldn't make much difference.

Shift into Park, set the brake. Release the brake, shift out of Park.

Having said that, release the brake before you move, and set the brake after you stop. The car really doesn't care about the sequence, as long as the car is not in motion while the brake is set.

I always hold the car with the brake pedal while setting and releasing the parking brake, making the sequence of shifting into and out of Park pretty much a moot point. But, your message is to not bind the drive train before setting the brake, and that's good advice.
