Problems and quality concerns with newer toyotas, Anyone had these? 2003 Taco 4x4

Hmmmm. Interesting. I used to work for GE Plastics, and they have a Lexan plant in Mt. Vernon, IN, just below Evansville. (as an aside, Fosgene is used in the manufacture of Lexan. I often questioned the wisdom of having large tanks of Fosgene at the middle/end of Tornado Alley...)

At any rate, I got sent there for a week, so while I was there I took a tour of the Tacoma plant in Evansville...(or as much of a 'tour' as they had...)

California,

Well - thats about as good as it gets - you actually have been there. Discounting the possibility of some sort of parallel universe, I've got to believe you were really there. The Nummi site said all Tacomas were made at the Nummi plant in Freemont. So, thats what I thought it meant.

Interesting...I went there in '96...I was thinking of taking an on-site postion at Mt Vernon, and the wife was going to try for Toyota. Perhaps they have shifted production from Evansville to Fremont. Uh, remember the 'quality' of the Geo's???

I'n willing to bet that since I was there, production of trucks has moved to Fremont (closer to the bed facility) and the Camry and Solara are made in Evansville...

As an aside, I bought my first 'Yota in '74, brand new. *All* truck beds for North America are made in California (maybe that's changed *now*, but that os the way it was ever since Toyota started importing trucks to this country!) So the next time some wise-ass who hates Jap cars tell you "The beds rust because of that cheap Jap steel....) (poor design was the

*real* reason!)

What about that plant in LA? I remember seeing a huge number of truck beds were coming from there when we were dealing with a site not too far away. My team did a plume model which led to a Prop.65 notification to the surrounding businesses and freeway in the event of a outgassing (it was something I used to do before retiring). We had air monitoring stations established all around the area and I remember quite a large number of trucks coming from the Toyota plant with Tacoma beds, and I mean a huge amount of truck traffic coming and going, which necessitated moving the air monitoring station to a safe location. Anyway, do you know if the plant is still there making truck beds?

Evansville.

Here's a PDF file with a map of North America and all the Toyota plants and what they make. It seems the Tacomas are made in Freemont, and next year a plant in Baha will make them too.

WOW

This is some really great info! I see that there's a plant in Long Beach but nothing in the northeast of LA. I guess that answers that question exceptionally well. Actually makes lots of sense to consolidate operations to transportation centers, I recall that there was lots of trucks coming in and going out, no close rail line and that part of LA is a nightmare in rush hour, but then again, LA is a nightmare anytime.

Thanks, and very much appreciated, too.

The site says they began producing the Hilux in 1991 and the Tacoma in 1995 when Toyota rebadged the Hilux. Probably made them at both plants for a while.
