SERV REQD

My '05 Tundra flashed the 'SERV REQD' light for about 15 seconds after starting the truck. What does this indicate? The truck has 32000 miles on it.

Double check the manual, but I think this means you need an engine, or maybe a new transmission.

I certainly hope you are joking! But as a matter of fact the manual was the next place I was going to look. I just happened to be sitting in front of the 'puter' reading some of the other posts where people made an attempt to answer in an intelligent and helpful manner and thought maybe someone could help me...my mistake.

You need to pull codes and go from there. You can buy a scan tool for about $100 or pay about $75 to have the dealership pull them, or visit AutoZone and use their scan tool for free.

If you are the kind of person to do your own auto repairs, then you should buy the tool. If you are prone to having a mechanic do your service, then you should use the scan tool from AutoZone to see if you really need to have the vehicle serviced.

In any case, pull codes before you hyper ventilate and set yourself up for a service call.

I'm pretty sure he's joking too. (Barry, you forgot the smiley...)

The time to really worry is the Check Engine light is flashing and continues to flash, then you stop and check all the fluids and belts under the hood. And even if it all looks OK your next stop (no excuses) is still the closest mechanic with a code reader.

If nobody is close by, stop and call - a tow is still cheaper than a new catalytic converter. Flashing CE light means damage can occur.

First thing: Check for a loose gas cap. If the evaporative emissions system can't pressurize the gas tank, it throws a code. And don't try to refill the tank with the engine running, that confuses the hell out of the system.

A "Maint Required" could be many things - don't ask me what, though. Probably nothing super critical, but check the book.

Thanks guys, I did check the 'book' which is what B A R R Y was suggesting. It says to change the oil...this is odd since I just bought the truck from a toyota dealer and have only put 1500 miles on it. I would guess the code will have to reset even after the oil change? Maybe they forgot to reset it since they said the truck was serviced. Wormsign

Or they gave it to a tech who didn't realize you could reset the timer even if the light hasn't gone on yet. And I'll bet you can.

If that light is supposed to go off every 5K to 7.5K to signal a service stop, it is probably resetable mid-way if you do the service work early before the light triggers.

The book should list the reset process - probably something simple like "hold in a button on the dash (like the trip odometer reset button) with one hand and start the engine with the other hand. Hold the button till the Maint Reqd light flashes, then release."

Heres what I found for a '05 Tundra 2WD V6-4.0L

Indicator Condition:

State: Blinking: Condition: The vehicle runs 4,500 miles after the previous setting: Specified State: The indicator blinks for 12 seconds after the ignition switch is on (after 3 seconds for a bulb check).

State: Continuously Illuminated: Condition: The vehicle runs 5,000 miles after the previous setting: Specified State: The indicator is continuously illuminated after the Ignition switch is on.

Maintenance Liquid Resetting Procedure a. Set the display window to ODO. b. Turn the ignition switch off. c. Pressing the reset switch, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (keep pressing for at least 5 seconds). d. Reset Procedure is completed.

HINT:

- If the ignition switch is turned off during the reset procedure. LCD: off IND: off

- If the reset switch is pressed off during the reset procedure. LCD: return to ODO IND: Keep the previous state of reset

It's not a code. You can easily reset it.

You got it!

The light comes on 4500 miles after a reset, flashes longer and longer, then latches at 5000.

The question gets asked here every week.

B A R R Y found these unused words:

How ?

Gee, must be blind, could miss is occasionally, but "every week" ???

From the "total miles display", hold in the odo reset button and start the truck. Want a page number for the manual?

Maybe be not every week HERE, but awfully often:

Usenet:

Web forums:

Other information that pops up when looking for the solution in a manual can be interesting! Did you know that people who have cracked the manual for the first time for a vehicle they've owned for years have discovered features they didn't even know the vehicle had?

On the other hand, this and other forums are two way deals. Putting a LITTLE effort in before hand shows some initiative, and respect for those who take the time to help, rather than treating the forum as some sort of government funded extension service.

Once upon a time, most online forums and newsgroups had a FAQ (frequently asked question list), Google has done a wonderful job of making the FAQ obsolete.
