Synthetic oil

I just installed a Marlin Crawler re-built L-52 HD 5 spd in my 80 Toyota. Filled the trans and transfer with GL-5 80-90W gear oil. I plan to change to a synthetic at 4-500 mi. Can anyone recommend a good off the shelf oil? Thanx in advance, Dave

Hey Roger! Please check out this site and post back what you think about some of his findings. I.E. synthetics and additives.

I value your opinion(s) a lot.

Lots of very good information and lots of debunking myths and hype. Anything you see from "Terry" or "Molekule" you can take to the bank. You'll spot other authoritative posters by the content of their posting.

I look at that site frequently and there is some good information there. However, one has to be careful b/c most of the posts are ignorant cyber lip flapping from the peanut gallery. There is a lot of silly hand wringing over a few ppm in the analysis sections. Also, there can be an impression to those that don't know the dynamics of the site that Auto-RX, Fuel Power and Lube Control are the panacea for all engine ills.

For a site with the database of oil analysis that it has, with some study one can get a good grasp of how to do extended service intervals without compromising engine longevity. Ironically, very few who post to the site actually do them, and in fact most actually are constantly switching oil brands in very short change intervals with little intention of estblishing trending patterns, which ends up to be fairly useless.

Why would Marlin recommend GL-5 gear oil for my trans? I understand Redline synthetic is top of the line, but I was looking for a good oil that could be bought locally (NAPA, etc).

Marlin recommended GL-5 for my transfer cases that he built for me. Note sure what he recommends for the transmission, but the shop that rebuilt my tranny recommended a GL-4 oil and Redline specifically. In fact they wanted to put it in right after the rebuild, but I opted for conventional oil for 1-2000 miles then drain and refill with synthetic. I've run both GL-4 and GL-4 oils in my Toyota 5-speed and find that GL-4 just plain works better. If you want to use GL-5 and find the shifting slugging, add a tube of limited slip diff additive (or use a GL-5 oil with LSD additives already in it). The addivitves help the synchros work better.

This is not refferenceing transmissions per se, but Ferrarris ship with Shell oil, and it aint synthetic. A friend of mine works at Scottsdalew Ferrari and he says that the synthetic is not picked up by the daual oil pump setup causing the oil pressure to be lower than designed for. This was tested in a 328 with Castrol synthetic , I think , not sure but I think that was the brand , oil pressure came back up to snuff when switched back to the factory recommended Shell cheap stuff.
