Tacoma - Can I defrost without the AC running?

I recently purchased a 03 Tacoma after owning a Mazda B2200 Cab Plus LX for

15-1/2 years. A feature I liked on the Mazda was the ability to run the defroster without having the AC come on. If I needed a quick clearing of the windshield, I'd manually switch the AC on for a few minutes.

When I saw the manual AC control on the Taco, I "assumed" it operated the same as my Mazda. The user manual didn't mention that the AC comes on when you turn the selector to defrost, but it does, even though the AC indicator light is not illuminated. If I turn the fan off, the AC remains off, and so long as I'm moving, the windshield remains clear with the selector in defrost.

Does anyone know of a simple way to turn the AC off when the defroster is on?

Thanks,

Dave

I've seen instructions on the web about how to disconnect the automatic AC turn-on. Do a Google search.

I found these instructions for disabling the AC in defrost mode on a 98 Tacoma. Does anyone know if they still hold true for a 2003?

John, your right, it doesnt come on because too many people complained their AC would come on when in defrost mode, so they did away with the light in that mode, BUT, your AC is still on in defrost mode. I too, have a 98 Tacoma, remove the glove box door, just disconnect the small 2 pin connetor in the heater control panel, if you want AC in defrost, just push the button. It works just like I want it to now. I like having more control of my own vehicle. :-)

I couldn't find that connector in my 2002. Looking at the panel (removed) it's all electronic and IIRC one answer here to my query was that the computer on that panel had to be reprogrammed.

I called Toyota (national) and they "made a note of my concern".

So I reverted to raising the temp control until the AC clicks off. I like to run the desert with the air coming through the windscreen vents - but it was causing me too much milage drop ... !

I think you are correct. The wiring diagram for my '02 shows a computer controlling AC functions. I suppose it is possible to install a toggle switch in the power lead to the AC compressor clutch. No power = no compressor = no AC regardless of what the computer says to do. Personally though I like having the AC come on during defrost. It also cycles the system routinely during the winter months when the AC would not normally get used at all. That's good as far as I am concerned. But to each his own :).
