tacoma spare tire

1999 tacoma 2wd xcab 2.4 man trans

how does the spare tire stay up in the well seems like the cable alone won't be able to keep the heavy tire up i don't see any support for a bar to go across the tire

How heavy do you think the tire is? A new 1/4" diameter steel cable has a safe working load of over 1000 pounds. Of course when the cable rusts (as has happened with these cables) the safe working load can drop to around zero pounds....

Pretty sure it is only the cable. My 97 4Runner was the same, and in a miracle of engineering longevity, my 2010 Tacoma is still just the cable.

Hmmm, mie [2002 DC] has a small shaped block that inserts lengthwise into the hub openning of the wheel. This then positions horizontally and 'grips' the edges.

The cable then is raised until the upper part of the tire contracts a brace.

1/8th turn additional and it's locked from 'bouncing' and working loose.

'Course the 2nd spare for OR has to go in the bed of the truck ...

Of course, you need something to clamp through the wheel's center bore. I think JMc means there is no bracket or crossbar that supports the entire wheel when it's raised.

A stranded cable is also damage-tolerant. Put a dent in a steel bar and the crack may propagate through the bar, breaking it. Cut a few wires in a cable and it still retains 80-90% of its original strength.

That is what I meant, I did not think I needed to be that precise, but neither do I intend to debate. I think the OP got his/her answer. Thanks for the assist.
