Tundra Exhaust Leak

Anyone else have a leak at the exhaust manifold that gets quiet after a minute or two when the manifold heats up. Looks like the left manifold is a real pain to remove.

Also have a rattle under the chassis when I drive over small potholes which I can't seem to locate when the car is static. Any clues appreciated.

My 2000 Tundra had a crack in the left exhaust manifold that was replaced at 48,000 as a warranty item.

The exhaust leak is somewhat common. The manifolds are welded of stainless steel tubing, and the crack is usually in the weld where the stub to a cylinder exhaust port is welded to the flange that bears against gasket.

You have choices...

1) Ignore it. 2) If you can get it renewed under warranty, do so. Be sure they listen to both sides in case both are leaking, but one side has a bigger, louder leak. You can use a piece of small hose, maybe about 3' long. Hold one end to your ear and safely hold the other end near the manifolds while the engine is running but not yet warm. You'll clearly hear the leak. 3) Install headers. S&S makes the best performing, and JBA are quite good and California certified. Use OEM gaskets. Headers will cost less than new manifolds if you have to pay. 4) You might ask at tundrasolutions.com if anyone will give you a leaky manifold. Try taking that to a welding shop and ask if they can TIG weld the leaking area. If they say that they can make it better than ever and not interfere with the gasket sealing, you could try that.
