Draw-Tite has a kit that hooks up to the existing wiring harness and utilizes the existing power cable that is included in the harness. It requires a pig-tail to be connected to the power wire and then to the battery.

Very simple to install and has good instructions included.

No, 4 pin is 4 pin. Ground, left brake, right brake and running.

To be a bit more accurate: White Ground Yellow Combination Stop/Left Turn Green Combination Stop/Right Turn Brown Tail/Marker

If you need a converter to go from the three-wire system on your Toyota (Stop, Left Turn, Right Turn) to the 2-wire trailer (Stop/Left and Stop/Right) on a standard American trailer there are two kinds. The passive converters do not need any external power, but they give you rather dim trailer lights. The power has to go through transistors and diodes in the converter, and you drop a volt or so in the process.

The active converters do require you to run a fused power feed lead from the battery to the converter, but with an active converter your trailer lights are always at full brightness. Much better for daytime stoplight visibility.

I prefer to rewire the trailer to the three-wire system, it's a little more work but then it plugs right in and works on any tow vehicle without needing any modifications or converters. Usually you have to add a second set of stop lights on the trailer to be the Stop Lights. Run another wire up to the tongue, and wire them to the Stop lead on the 6-wire or 7-wire round commercial connector. If the tow vehicle uses the American system, the new lights don't do anything.
