wanting to buy a 02-05 Tacoma

Hi guys I'm looking to get out of my 96 S10 Chevy 4x4 and move into a 02-05 Tacoma. I need the 4x4 and want a extra sidedoor cab. Not sure is I should get a 4 or 6. Any thoughts on what to look for, what you that have had one would recommend ? Any problems with a certain year? etc? Thanks........

'Side door cab' - do you mean an extra cab or a double cab?

IF the DC, then get the 6 - the added weight needs the additional power.

Keep in mind thee was a new model with lots of changes changes for Taco in 2005, better engine, bigger truck, etc. I have one (base 4 cyl std cab) and am really satisfied. 4 cyl (DOHC, variable valve timing, etc) is reasonably strong at 164 hp unless you are towing or carrying heavy loads, as a 4 cyl it's not really smooth though. Mine has been perfectly reliable, mileage runs about 24+ with 5 speed. Not sorry I bought mine.

Jim doesn't note -=if=- his "base 4 cyl std cab" is 4x4.

On my 2002 DC, 6 cyl, I get about 22 hiway at 70 and about 14 when desert

4x4'ing. If you truly -=need=- the 4x4, then I submit you -=NEED=- the extra power!

Just don't floor it at every start up or slam on the brakes at stoplights and you'll do well.

It's 2wd, and the mileage figure is overall, not highway.

Just as a note the truck is geared VERY tall - 60 mph in 5th gear is

2000 rpm. Quieter, less engine wear.

You'll get much less than that 'overall' if you do any 4x4 crawling. When I get out ... I get OUT! Some places we're in 4x4 for days, oten 1/3rd in low transfer.

That pretty much matches my TDC ... I run 2300 at 70.
