warning lights

Any ideas on this, I have an '86, it's barely broke in, but I have this problem that the charge and brake lights, they came on and stayed on. I went to the local dealer and asked the service guy what he thought...said, "it's the alternator, probably brushes are gone." Took it to Advance, they tested, battery good, alternator putting out 12.8. Few days later somone said I had a brake light out. That had to be it, since I'm writing this, it wasn't it. There are no other electrical problems that I can detect. ?

Thanks ..Glenn

The alternator should put out more then 12 volt.. More like 14+ .. If it only put out 12 volts it would never charge a battery. I think you might want to check that again.

had the same problem: when I pulled the alternator , I took it down to the garage to be checked. They couldn't find fault with it either. After I reinstalled it, was charging ok for about a week, then the same lights would come on again. So then I replaced the brushes and haven't had that problem since. New ones cost me 5 bux at Lordco here in Canada, the old ones were worn down to less than 1/4" in length. Guess I got good mileage out of them -)

My lights have been doing the same thing on my 88' 22RE w/AC - 4X4.. I finally looked under the hood and I am wondering what other parts have to be removed before I can pull the the alternator? I dropped the brush gaurd and took a look underneath. Here the lower radiator hose looks to be in the way. What's the easiest way to get this out?
