1776cc dellorto 40's NON START !!

i dont seem to be having much luck with this engine i've built.

1776cc , Engle 110 cam , Dellorto 40's the only thing i have done wrong is ive got the distributor drive gear 90 out (ie the offset lies nearest the crankcase seam - vertical if you look down the hole and not horizontal as the Haynes manual says ) but i'm happy i know where TDC is for No 1 and ive rotated all the plug leads 90degress out aswell....... I set static to 7.5degrees BTDC - used the multimeter method. With the carbs i bought the Dellorto Superformance Book and followed the pre-tune - feller gauge down barrel , 3 turns on mixture screws. Turn the Key hear some compression noise (engine turns over ok - tight but ok ) .... Then a Big loud BANG of backfire !!! I'm tired , pissd off , i've worked all saturday (12+ hours) all day Sunday , i'm confused because i'm happy everything is set up

Any one got any ideas ?? Many Thanks

...move the spark plug wires one spot all the way around the cap....suyre sounds like you are off by one.

I agree. There are **TWO** TDC spots for #1. Only one is the firing stroke.

Set the engine where the rotor arm points to #1 plug wire. Then remove the #1/2 valve cover. #1 Intake AND Exhaust valves *must* be closed (rocker arms loose).

If they are *not*, you are not on firing stroke.

I believe we _all_ mess up the plug wiring at least once. Check again, being sure that #1 is truly on the firing (compression) stroke, check rotor position and plug-em all in again. 1432.

To be honest Jim I thought I was on the firing stroke but yet again I'll check again (I was half asleep when I set the valve clearances )

Thanks
