1972 bus unstable on the road

Got this in from a guy who wanted me to fix the engine. Engine runs fine but when driving the bus the least shock causes the bus to dance on the road like a boat on the water. Any idea what's screwed? Alignment is ok, i had it checked.

Look for worn bushings on the rear suspension.

To me, this sounds like the shocks are stuck. Had this on my brother's 1302. Easy to determen, harder to fix (but doable) Rock the bus to see which one is stuck.

I'm no expert on buses but I owned an early '70s Type 1 Bug a few years ago.

It had torsion bars at the front and swing axles at the back.

How's the steering box. Check it for excessive play.

Mine used to almost change lanes in a strong side wind on the Sydney Harbour Bridge until I was able to track a replacement down.

I'm still looking for a steering box having replaced the bridge with one with much wider lanes..

Cheers

how about a bad tire? low pressure? tie-rod ends worn out?

Mismatched tires. Wrong tires - they need to be light truck tires, load range "C" which are 6-ply rated tires. Sometimes people will replace one or two tires with passenger car rated tires and will still have two of the proper tires on there also. Almost impossible to drive that way. With the proper 6-plys on there, the inflation pressure needs to be correct also (waaaayyy up there!) After checking tires, next guess is bushings, but mine are bad and it's kinda fun! It does rear-steer significantly though. Oh - another thing - if the steering sticks it could have sticking ball joint(s). -BaH
