1973 THING - what is the ground? Negative or Positive battery terminal?

Hey gang,

NEW 1973 THING owner here - came without a battery (it ran but the owner wanted the battery - who knows?). Question is, this guy painted almost every square inch of this car INCLUDING the battery cables! I can't tell which cable is which color! So which cable is the ground? I know - "the one attached to the car's body", but which post on the battery does the ground cable go? Negative? Positive? Thanks!

All aircooled VW's I've ever seen were negative ground. For the most part only old British machinery is positive ground (earth.)

It would probably be a good idea to unbolt the ground cable and clean where it connects. Paint can seep in and weaken the connection.
