68 VW Bug Front Brake Questions

I am trying to fisnih up my front brakes and then the Master Cyliner and blead the brakes. I have having 2 problems.

First I am trying to get my Shoes on but I think I need the tool to get the spring with the pin on. And also my small spring that goes from one shoe to the other in the front seems to short. Not sure if it's for the rear or not. It came with my kit I bought off ebay.

Second problem is I bought new Wheel Bearings. The front one "Smaller of the two" fit perfect but the rear one is too loose. That is the racer that goes into the drum is loose. I ordered them off Aircooled.net and am sure I specified the right year. Do I just goto another web site and order another pair of them and hope they fit?

Thanks Steven

You don't need a spring tool. Put the lower ends of the shoes in place with the spring attached. Then pull the shoes apart at the top to get them on the wheel cylinder.

'68 was an odd year. The spindle size changed as did the tie rod ends. I'm sure John Connolly will make things right if you ask.

Hmmmm, My suggestion to you would be to waste no more money on this car, just put it away and forget about it, hope this helps.

The spring and pin that go at the top and bottom that hold each Shoe on. The ones on the back brakes were easy to do but these are not.

Will email aircooled.net and see if I can excange.

Thanks Steven

Looking at Aircooled.net it appears my spring set is for the rear brakes which I already had those on the car so I guess I will have to prder front springs from Aircooled.net. I emailed them about the inner race bearings.

Thanks Steven

Are you doing both front brakes ? do you have your old brake parts to look at ?

Push the spring with your fingers or pliers, then put the pin in from the rear and twist.

Put the springs on 1st then put the shoe assembley on the cylinders/ajusters by levering them apart.

From all I have heard of J.C. at aicooled.net, just let them know you are having trouble and they will sort you out !

a bit ironic, that when follopiss posts within 2 replies is your name... maybe you should lead by example? or you could always try the ole "keep your pipe shut" game... fullopiss is a breath of fresh air here at Remco.and.Tricky.vw.idlechat

True

But feeling less about fullopiss and more about tim I just thought I would offer some calm words.

Others may read and ignore him too ?

..........I ignore most trolls most of the time which is as good as it can get for me. This 'feeding the troll' admonishment has been around so long that it needs refurbishing or something so that it doesn't sound like I'm breaking some sort of special rule here at this unmoderated forum. If you just want to say that I'm upsetting you, that would be more meaningful. I'm probably going to make it through several weeks or maybe even months before my next outburst so chilling is a possibility........maybe.......maybe not.

No offence meant ! Not upsetting me . I just thought you were upset and could do with a 'chill' talk :-)

Maybe I should take Joey's advice and keep my mouth shut .

..............Don't be afraid of Joey. He's a lovely human being who's too modest and selfconcious to reveal his true inner feelings of compassion and understanding.

that along with the fact that i never said he should "keep his mouth shut".... reading comprehension is in the toilet these days...

idlechat? I don't get it. All I do is ask (possibly dumb) questions and all Rich does is answer them..

No SHoes were on the front brakes. Doing both front brakes. My springs in the kit I got off ebay are too small and are for the rear brakes I believe but my read brakes had the shoes and other parts which I replaced all of them.

Thanks Steven

They are called races, not racers.

There was a mid-year change of the wheel spindle inner diameter in '68. Your car is apparently from the early part of that year. You just need the early bearing that worked for all cars up to mid-68.

It's good that you caught this. I've seen cars where the larger bearing was just installed and no one noticed the difference, other than a little extra wobble in the steering wheel.
