69' bug turn signal cancel

My turn signal lever will not click back to the center position. I'm forever running with my blinker on. I'm a do it your-self guy and would like to know if there is an online explaination of the correct procedure to fix the problem. Thanks.

I replaced my turn signal switch back when I first got my bug. A few years later and it was back to not returning. I guess the little plastic pegs can't hold up to Texas heat. Anyhow, if the signals work, then I don't think it's worth the effort and cost to replace. Just get in the habit of turning off the signal when you're done turning or changing lanes.

It's simple to replace (on a 70). Disconnect the battery. Take off the steering wheel. Unbolt the signal switch unit. Carefully record how the wires are connected - they thread under the steering column and into the trunk compartment. They disconnect from the back of the fuse box in there. Put the new unit in place, reconnect the wires, replace the steering wheel, reconnect the battery. Check the horn and that all the electrics work.

If the plastic parts aren't broken, it may be that the column is too far from the steering wheel. There should be just a small gap (it's listed in your Bentley manual, but I think it's something like 1/8").

2 bolts hold column to dash; loosen them to move it.
