'72 SB with rebuilt carb doesn't want to idle in the morning--gas pedal makes it worse

This only happens in the morning, In the afternoon or later it's fine. The mornings are getting cooler now in California and this is starting to get on my nerves. It's a catch 22. It won't stay idling unless I give it gas, but if I give it gas it makes a suffocating sound and then dies.

I rebuilt the carb, a H30/31 PICT, and kinda winged it by ear as far as the adjusting. I figured perhaps the butterfly choke should be adjusted which I did, and it works; however when starting cold it does the fast idle on the cam, but then the volume decreases and then it just dies. And then if I try to give it gas, like I said, it sounds like its suffocating and then dies. If If I then try to accelerate the cam outside the car, instead of the pedal after a certain point I pass before it wants to die it will make like a popping sound and then accelerate loudly. Like a dead spot before it revs up.

Prior to the rebuiding, even during the winter if the engine wasn't warmed up sufficiently it may have stalled at a stop or on deaccleration, but it NEVER died if I tried to give it more gas, if anything it would rev up normally.

There isn't a thermostat installed, but it didn't matter before. This only happens in the mornings, though. In the afternoon when it's warm or later in the day, even if the car is cold, it doesn't do this. I think it's because it's still very warm in central California, but the mornings are getting cooler, and thats when I'm having problems.

P.S. There is a rod/spring mechanism on the rear of the carb which connects to the acc pump I believe, and it has a hexagonal black tip on the threaded rod which can adjust the tension on the spring, should this maybe be adjusted?anyone help?
