72 super beetle stock motor and carb. Hard to start blues!

Ok folks, this is a car I have owned for a few months. It is in very good shape. Carb was rebuilt. Timing is on, good points, plugs, ets. And valves are adjusted. Vacuum advance dizzy. Prior to this dizzy it came with an 009 which i removed.............flat spot gone, but hard starting remains.

Stock jets in the carb....i verified this with "Car of the Century" a few were different and i swapped to stock, for it is a stock motor and was getting crappy mileage.

Cold, if you step on the pedal to engage choke, it fires up fairly easily.

Warm.............you got to crank it and crank it and it does not want to start or even catch for that matter. Seems that if you keep the pedal down eventually it will catch.

Any suggestions? __________________ Adam P Charleston,SC Coburn, WV

Very, very common in the summer. Caused by flooding in the carb. Can be caused by high fuel pressure overcoming the float needle or by fuel actually boiling in the bowl and siphoning down the throat.

Even with engine off, fuel pressure can build due to heat expansion.

As a first step, go on a long hot run then stop and immediately take off the air cleaner and look down the throat. If you see a white cloud or even fuel dribbling from the accel pump jet or the brass vent tube, think flooding.

I did take it for a fun, and i saw a little white smoke in there......... seems to be Wet looking where the top of the carb meets the body.(the piece you would take the 6 or so screws off to lift the top with float off the carb)
