79 VW turn signal light assembly question

Hi, just bought a partially-restored 79 Super Beetle from a guy who started it and lost interest. Front turn signal lights don't work properly. I don't know if the previous owner didn't wire it right or the person who painted it. Anyway, there are three wires coming up through the fender, a black wire, a gray wire and an orange wire. Black wire is hooked to the small bulb in the back, gray and orange wires are hooked to the larger bulb (with two base connectors) in front. Attached to the gray wire is a smaller black wire with a much smaller connector than the other three, and I assume it is ground, but the male connector that is part of the lens assembly frame is the same size as the others so the small connector wont fit. The lens assembly looks new, so I wonder if it is an aftermarket part that just doesn't have the right size male quick-disconnect. Anyone run across this?

(I had to get a special dispensation from my doc, but he said I could answer this one post :-)

The Orange wire may be faded Brown wire. If so, it should end grounded to the chassis somewhere under hood.

Gray is the Park light. The skinny Blk wire inside is a jumper from the Gray terminal to the little side light in back.

Black wire should have a stripe (might be hard to see). This is the Turn Signal lead.

If you hook it up correctly, the Park light should be dimmer than the Turn Signal.
