Hi RAMVA!
What are the best choices to choose an air conditioner for the bug? I've seen lots of ads, but I'd really want to know which are worth it and which are just hot air.
Thanks for you opinion.

.................You're just trying to torture us yankees up here in the northern latitudes, aren't you?..............lol

...the best kit currently offered is from Gilmore Enterprises in Florida (go figure a VW shop in florida would design a decent AC kit)

On Fri, 24 Oct 2003 15:43:25 -0400, "Tim Rogers" ran around screaming and yelling:
Bite me Yankeeboy, I also had to scrape my windshield this morning....and im in frigging Virginia...but there is a bright side...calling for sun and 72 degrees(F) tomorrow....woot woot J
My wife and I always comment that we're living in the WRONG State... We both hate the heat and would love to see snow and cold weather for a change. Few more years 2 of my kids will be off to college... and they WILL go to one UP NORTH! That's when "We'll load up the truck and move to Bev... Northbound"

timmy (who was so lazy.......uh.....I mean busy this fall that the swimming pool hasn't been closed yet)
Blah. I had to scrape the frost off of my *seats* before driving in to work today. With no top. And no doors. And no heat at all. And... I *liked* it. :-D

.................So you're able to use your brains to thaw out that driver's side seat?
No, I'm just trying to survive the hot caribbean weather. It's rainy outside, and a bug can get really hot with the vent windows closed.
Do they sell a kit for the 1973 Super beetle 1303? I need a kit that can be shipped overseas with clear instructions so I can install it myself.
...yes they do. Sropm them an e-mail...or call them (I know overseas is expensive)..one note....ANY ac system needs to be vacuumed down prior to filling...which limits the do it yourselfer.....but I see no reason why you couldn't plum and wire everything else...than handf the AC tech the sealed drier unit and have hime hook it up...vacuum down and fill. (the drier is nothing more than an oversized desicant pack....so you want to minimze the exposure to air (water) to as short a time as possible before mvacuuming andf filling of system
..Gareth
I'll send them an email. They can surely send the kit to my address in miami. from there I'll ship it here. And here I can get some A/C technician to install it for me. Anyway, how's the proces of vacumming and filling done?
...ok, hopefully someone who does this by trade will pipe in. I have done this process a few times when I lived in florida and worked at a car lot....but am far from an expert. Basically you want to vacuum down the system before filling....it removes all air/moisture etc and assues that your system will be uncontaminated. I always waityed to the last minute to remove the drier unit from its sealed package and hook it....as I said before it is a dessicant, so I tried to minimize the exposure to air. Absolutely necessarty pre-caution? I have no idea. It made sense to me, so thats the way I did it. Once the dryer was in place I'd hook up the vacuum pump. Then I'd go to lunch =-) This gave it 1/2 hour to an hour to evacuate any air. My thoughts were that you cannot over vacuum....but you can undervacuum. Once vacuumed down, I'd fill er up. Like I said....I'm no expert just someone with some general knowledge and experience on doing it that seemed to work pretty damn well. All the ac systems I fixed blew reallly cold air, and that was all I was concerned with. =-)

I have basically done the same thing as gary with A/C systems. I used to have a guy local that had a good vacum pump at his house (he did retro-fits to r134 for like 100 bucks on the side) I'd make all my repairs and then cruise over there and he'd put it on the vacum for like an hour. then I could do my thing with the r134. I have seen some vacum pumps they sell at like Harbour Freight for cheap, but I have never seen how they work though. You also might want/have to flush out the system to get any debris out. That might be a question for Gilmore when you purchase it though. I bought some flushing solution and a use a siphon blow gun to run it throught the lines (but thats whenever I change something out of an existing system, I have never done a new system).
Good luck, Mark Detro Englewood, FL
ICE Inc. of San Diego has the kits for AC installation in a Bug, or if you're nearby they can do the installation themselves.
Topless with no heat at all. Travis, you need to seek help.
