Adjust Brake Lights??

Ummm... take the train, man :-)

Mercedes and BMW I beleive have developed progressive Brake lights - the harder the pedal is pressed, the brighter and more lights light. You should always be watching at least one car in front of the one you are following - then you have more idea what is happening.

If someone is on and off the brakes, I will pass them as soon as possible - they usually are bad drivers. They aren't braking, just thinking about it. They should be watching 2 or three cars ahead and flowing with the traffic.

I travel a lot for work, and most drivers are VERY scary, and don't concentrate on driving. Often (because I watch ahead) I am overtaking before the car in front even realises there is a straight. The same people will tailgate for miles and never pass, they are so close they can't see past what they need to overtake (gas, brake, gas, brake) - so they may as well pull back and enjoy the drive and leave room for me to pull in where I need to :-) I'm not a perfect driver, I just plan ahead, and be courteous to those who are driving well and being courteous themselves. But if you're doing 80 in a 100 and are stopping people getting past, expect me to follow you with my high beams on, in third gear just waiting for you to brake so I can pull out and pass as you slow down (just to piss you off because every other time I pulled out, you sped up!)

Thats my rant for today!

For that, you just need to rig up some home version of a police speed gun on your dash, no sense in relying on the other guy to tell you. I think some cruise control systems in modern luxury cars already do this.. they match your speed to the car in front of you.

It seems like it'd be quite trivial to modify such a system to report what the guy in front is doing.

...................That's not a bad idea. Maybe you could even incorporate an audible alarm when there's a very large difference in your speed and the vehicle up ahead. Those big pile-ups involving several vehicles when there's fog or smoke would be less likely, I'd bet.

I have thought of a graduated brake light, that glows as bright red as the driver is applying the brakes. Dull red for "I'm just covering my brake", brighter as the driver applies more braking force, etc. And maybe bright and blinking while the ABS is pulsing the brakes, cause the moron driver is standing on the brake pedal!! ;-)

True, but I'd bet most people when "covering" their brake do not just let their foot dangle above the pedal, but press slightly on it to take up the freeplay and feel the pedal on their foot. And this is what takes the pedal off it's stop and thus actuates the brakelights, even though mo braking action is yet occuring.

How about using a small accellerometer (sp?) as a brake-light switch? It would be completely separate from the brake system itself and come on anytime the car was decellerating.

Let's fix the problem at the source. Take the airbags from every SUV on the road and place them on the outside of the vehicle. Then place a large spike in the center of the steering wheel. Following distances would increase overnight.

Some manufacturers have already come up with that type of technology in a laser measurement system, it slows the rear car down if too close to anything, even another car.........LOL This is being tested , If I'm not mistaken, on Toyotas...............Corrolla sized cars and such.

It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs. -- Oxford University Press, Edpress News

so most if not all of us here at ramva drive old cars because we like to *drive*...but we dream up ways to take the driving out of the drivers hands? makes no sense to me...we need to build better drivers, not better cars....i think it was Maudib that said to put the airbag on the bumper and a steel spike in the middle of the steering wheel, that would make people drive a bit smarter...(if it wasn't Maudib that said that i appologise to the person that did) JT

you are probably correct John....but that can be good...that way you know they could jam the brakes for no reason...better to be warned way ahead of time...... JT

I remember ads in Cycle magazine back in the `80s for a product called `Cyberlight' .... at least I think that was the name, it's been a long time. It was an add-on brake light that flashed slowly if you were gently braking and flashed progressively faster as you braked harder. I don't remember the particulars but I suppose it used an accelerometer.

The best idea that I have heard in a long time. I think that could be justified as part of the process of natural selection for idiots that drive SUVs. During the winter snow, the SUV drivers think that they are invincible, and have a feeling of superiority far higher than they normally do.
