aircooled.net trike kits??

Has anyone seen or bought one from snipped-for-privacy@aircooled.net? I'm thinking of a trike, and know about "brothers of the 3rd wheel" etc. and came across his chassis and body kits...I want a bare-bones old school trike and am thinking of just the chassis...anyone have stories, pics? btw - I've bought from John in the past, and have only GOOD things to say about his dealings w/me! and this is not spam - please feel free to email me or reply with any data...THANKS!! paul

Nothing against John that has brought us high quality parts and good advise for the past several years but VW based trikes are best for show and not driving.

Trikes in general are best for slow moving dutys like for meter-maids and ice cream trucks. In general they're poor handling, will try to swap ends under hard breaking and will lift the front end will the the least throttle blip in 1st gear. Almost all of the VW based trikes have wheelie bars to protect the engine...

not sure of the aircooled kits... but here is a link to my gallery of a trike built by a friend many years ago- very cool, very fast, and "mid-engine" so less wheelies.. but it would still do them if needed...

That's a better design than most but it still has almost no front breaks. The Morgan 3-wheeler design is far superior but not very motorcycle like.

very nice.....how did the thing do as far as overheating the engine if you had to stop in traffic? my bike is air/oil cooled and it gets HOT fast in stopped traffic....

not sure... he did not do much stopping in traffic... 8^)

i think that with a "modern" oil cooler and fan setup it would be much better-

as for the front brakes... he drove hard and fast and never had problems-

the twist throttle 'tiller' handlebar design was one of the most interesting features- it allowed him a free hand for the shifter- right foot brake- and left foot clutch- the c.g. and front/rear weiht was so well placed he regularly out ran 2 wheeled sport bikes through the local twisties... it just stuck flat and fast- with a slight drift-

he is still doing v.w. work here in arizona- about 5 min. from my home- a great mechanic- does not care for bling bling... but hides some monster motors under those semi-gloss tins...

Hey THANKS for the photos! That's cool, well thought out, and much better to have more weight up front. I like the dual carbs and the "diamond tuck" upholstery (sp?)...and I bet the plugs are easier to change.... and it's not all "yuppied out" or purple w/ a VW body....stuff like black primer and rat bikes appeal to me.. I'm so ignorant - how to make it MID engined? Flop gears or ? Is that Busch beer in the pic? Geez I miss those days! again - thanks! :+) paul

flop the ring and pinion i guess... that one was just swing axle- an irs setup might be interesting-

as for the lack of yuppish.. i think it was built in the late 70's early eighties... theres one pick with a little girl in it? i think- we were the same age- and i was born in 71... so actually mid 70's..

There's a fella goes by "Beaver Creek Bob" has a little VW shop on the Oregon Coast Highway who builds some nice 3-wheelers. I wasn't particularly interested when he was showing me what he's building, but was impressed with the quality and simplicity. As I recall he uses the ass end of a T3 pretty much intact. - BaH

Is he in Beaver, Oregon on highway 101? If so I used to drop in and talk to him from time to time some years ago when my folks lived in the next town south of there.

The next town north of Hebo on 101 is Beaver and there is a guy there that has an aircooled VW shop. It's a rather rat-hole looking place but there are a few aircooled VW shops on the Oregon coast.
