Alternator and Pulley

i have a 74 Superbeetle with a 1600 engine bosch alt Hi i just got my alternator back from a rebuilding shop, the alternator had gotten tied up while driving and failed to turn, Well i took off the alternator without removing the engine, noticed that the pulley left some marks on the alternator as if it were touching it or grinding it, Is there supposed to be anything between the alternator faceplate and the pulley? should i put shims between the alternator and pulley so it gets farther away from the alternator? the belt it has is a 905mm should i buy the 912mm? i havent found any pictures as to how it should look between the alternator and the pulley. so i put a couple of shims on the alternator end and the pulley but i tested it out for a couple of miles and i noticed the pulley was getting hot the more i drove it, i think i need to replace the pulley cause it got damaged when it touched the alternator. can i put some quick weld on the alternator faceplate to clear the marks the pulley made? or that quick metal compoun that fixes metal cracks (i saw it on autozone and it says it gets harder as the heat increases)
