Alternator Issues

I own a 1976 Thunderbug (Meyers Manx Clone), and I am having issues with the charging system. It runs perfect all day long. That is until it hits night time and I have to turn on the lights. For some reason the Alternator will not keep up with the battery draw from the lights. I have a 55 amp alternator and my system shouldnt be drawing that much amperage. Could it be that the wire from my alternator to my battery is too small and not passing enough current under a load to keep up with the draw on the battery? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

That's possible. You should have at least a #8 (#6 better) wire. Measure the voltage at B+ and then at the battery with the lights on and 2000 RPM. See if there is a difference. Should be charging at roughly ~14V (13.5V if charged).

Check all ground(Earth (-)) connections, including the tranny strap.
