Another "how much is it worth?" 67 VW (again)

Okay, the link to 11 pictures is below, but here's the lowdown. Been searching around here for years for a VW for sale and found this at an antique car dealer. It has a really bad white paint job over factory baby blue. Engine is out, dealer said they would put it in and make sure it runs good. I would need to put brakes and tires on it, maybe a hose or two, and maybe some bulbs. That's just to make it driveable. Pan seems solid but I think it has inserts on top of the original pan since underside rust holes can be seen that can't be seen inside. Some bondo spots, hard to tell how much since everything's been painted white (see overspray on running boards, chrome, rubber, etc) but overall it seems solid. This is a 67 and the engine is a 1600 and is not the original. I'd like to drive it for a season and then fix it up, better paint, new rubber, interior--not a ground-up restoration but just make it look a little more like it's suppose to. Located in Iowa. Any gut reaction evaluations? Opinions? Here's the link:

Thanks in advance. I know you guys hate doing this without touching the car but I'd really like to know if the price is reasonable. I'll post his price after I get some opinions.

Thanks again!!

Rebecca (if this gets posted twice it's because I got errors when I posted it the first time so I'm trying again.)

Bad link.

A rust bucket which has been patched together and generously swabbed with Bondo? That you haven't driven because then you would find out that the tranny is shot and the front end won't stay on the road? Comes with engine of dubious quality? And is the featured car on some dealer's lot?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

$50 if it could be used as a planter...

(I'm not really as mean as that sounds.)

Not working for me...

To be honest, it seems a bit of a bodge job. Bad spraypaint with overspray everywhere rings alarm bells - WHY has it been painted in such a hurry? It's probably full of bodyfiller.

Those 'pans sound frightening!

If I were you, unless it is really cheap... take your time and search out a better car.

No price necessary. You would be time and money ahead to drive down here to Texas and buy a car from us. 1970 Beetle. I rebuilt the engine and I'm soon going to be doing a little more body work and touch up the paint job. All this car really needs to be road worthy is minor stuff. Bolt a fender back on completely, re-install the horn, and it will drive most anywhere you'd want to take it! (And you would be out far fewer dollar bills replacing floor pans, doing engine work, etc., etc., etc.!)

But if it is a bit much of a drive for you, I'll understand!:~)

If it is a project car you are looking for I'll happily sell you one of those too!:~) (Be interested in a 1971 Ghia or a 1974 Thing??? I'm serious. I'd like to clear off some driveway space!:~)

Is it one of those links that only works with a Bill Gates product?

Rebecca, I live in southern Iowa and know what is found here and I also know what is found in other areas of the country. This is not a good looking project and I know you would be money ahead to get one from a part of the country where you find surface rust and solid metal and matching signal lights. If I were buying it and since I have a few engines of my own, I would expect to put in brakes and maybe another $300 or so in misc stuff it will need just to run it in an "as is" condition. If it has all legal papers, it is worth about $250 as it is. If he puts in a solid motor with good compression and oil pressure, add another $250. If he demonstrates everything mechanical works well and is dependable (idependent mechanic who knows vw's, if you are in DM maybe Jerrys bug shop will give it a checkout for $50 or so?) add another 250. $750 for a dependable beater in Iowa is ok in my opinion. You can do better in my opinion

Methinks "Rebecca" might be bait. She's advertising for sex contests. ? How many people can ? in a Bug or something?

....sometimes bad can be good. ;-) As for the VW, as others have stated it seems like a poor choice unless its extremely cheep. The sugggestions to look on the samba were wise, and patience would be a good thing to try and have. Are you specefically seeking an early VW? Rust issues are the biggest concern....mechaincals can be fixed much easier than rust.

Maybe she can work it out in trade. If she gets a cheap Bug that needs a lot of work, she's likely to be on her back anyway.

No, but I've been after a running bug for years. Strange that my page doesn't work for you all but around here it works fine. I get tons of e-mail off my page so I know a lot of people view it. The guy actually wants $3000 for the bug, can you believe it? I'll give you all his number if you'd like to call him and maybe after several calls he'll come down on the price, seeing as experienced VW people have seen it now.

I wasn't advertising for my personal page, just using my webspace to post the pictures. If I were selling something it would be different...

I wish I had the time and money to drive 1000 miles, buy a car, and get it back here. I'll just keep watching the local paper, the owner of which has about six fully restored VWs that he drives to work, a different one each day it seems like. If you guys didn't see my other post he wants $3000 for it, running. I told him throw the engine in the passenger seat and I'll take it for $500 and he said I couldn't find a car this good for under $2000. I told him good luck and see you later. Pity. Well, it's 4am and there's a spider on my monitor so thanks for replies!...

Rebecca.
