not for purists. but did you know Gerber Baby food jar lids fit
perfectly over the "clean air" outlets in the cooling shroud? for summer.
a lot of cooling energy is lost to the heater boxes. or if you gave up
on heat and use "J" tubes.
yes, you can paint them. black.

 Water cooled engine freeze plugs will also fit.

 In my opinion the heater boxes need a little air flowing through or
they will cook.
 Even with the heater lever in the off position a little air flows
through.
