Ball Joint and Tie rod inspection

Knowing that the best way would be to just replace all of the ball joints and tie rod ends, is there a way to inspect them and tell if they are good or bad? I know that any of these with damaged boots should be considered toast. What are some of the other sure signs of needing replacement?

LOL!

It's in the Bentley Manual.

VW had a special tool (of course). It was a heavy gauge sheet metal lever assy which forces the 2 trailing arms apart (car jacked up). As you are spreading the trailing arms, you measure how much the ball joint stud moves out of the joint.

Max. play: Lower: .040" Upper: .080
