I dont know about the type 2 drum brakes on a type 1.

There is a disc brake conversion, that I am considering upgrading for my '66. It is the disc conversion kit that allows you to use your exsisting front spindles and it comes with new hoses, bearings, rotors ,calipers, pads, and a new dual piston master cylinder

I saw one of the conversion kits today... man that rotor is one big hunk of cast iron. pretty heavy and beefy looking, and it looks like it can be installed in minimum time, plus it has everything you need to do the conversion. I think this kit would run ya about $450~ ish

Just trying to help

don't worry about the shipping....you should receive two boxes(near 40 pounds each.) one has the rear assemblies, the other has the two front spindles/backing plates....one has a rotor the other doesn't.... i did find that you get a bargain when having things shipped from a business that has an account with a shipper!!!....anyway just "pass it on"....someone will need something you have someday...help em out...will email the tracking numbers today sometime...(sick for the past few days, so go easy on my slow ass...LOL)

Thanx and will do. I've been a bit slow lately too. I was rear ended in the Steurmkeafer a couple weeks ago and my back is still hurting. Fortunately the damage is minimal but I'm fighting the insurance company over the heat exchangers. They will pay for the dented header but told me the head exchangers were probably leaking before the accident and they're not replacing them.

Sorry to hear that.....insurance companies can be a real pain to deal with....

This is such a low buck repair is stupid that they're screwing with me over it. Heat exchangers are only about $130 each. On the other hand since they have now proven that I cannot trust them, I have hired a lawyer to handle the rest of the case. fortunately for me the one honest lawyer lives and works in Portland, Oregon.

insurance companies love to get money in the form of premiums, but hate to turn it loose in the form of claims.... of course, from a business standpoint, they have to pay out as little as possible if they expect to continue operating....i have been fortunate over the years....had several claims for minor accidents(IE morons running into me) and i wanted fair compensation....wasn't interested in anything that wasn't due to me, but of course they wanted to lowball....knowledge is power in the situation....i had alstate agreeing to everything once i pointed out to them that their client rear ending my vw, which also bent the header pipes and pushed the decklid into the alternator, could have done serious damage to what the pipes are connected to....meaning engine.... i basically told them to replace what *I* could see that was damaged(which included the header, rear tin, and alternator pulley) that their adjuster ignored, or they could pay a competant vw mechanic to do a full evaluation on the soft alluminum heads that their client threw a shock to...i was nice, yet firm about it all...even provided pricing of parts.....used parts for the pulley and rear tin was fine....then even offered up some numbers of what heads cost, plus labor, and new alternator, etc....didn't take long for them to realize that i was being very reasonable in my original requests....

I'm taking the car to an aircooled Vdub specialist out around where my Sister and brother in-law lives and I'm hoping for a bid that make the insurance company piss their pants... My lawyer gave me some good advice on how to deal with them. Also I have my brand F truck if I need to drive something else for a while so I can stretch this out as long as I need to.

When it's all over I'll post the results here. Anyway my back is hurting and it's time for a pill... Just as well it's break time and I need to ship parts from my motorcycle parts biz. I will hold off on the pill until I get back home (I don't want to wreck the Bug again.)

Long story short, I was a bike mechanic until my beat up carcase could no longer take the abuse. I got a college degree that I haven't been able to use but along the way I taught myself enough computer stuff to work in IT for about 10 years until the crash of 2000 (I was able to hang on until early 02.)

While I was on unemployment I got to playing with bikes again. Not having much money, I tried a few things that all seemed like to much trouble for the return. Then I got the idea to go back to something I done when I still had my shop in 1983 and I started making motorcycle rectifiers again. Sure enough I was able to sell them on eBay. I started fiddling around with more complex things and now I have a pretty good line of charging system parts for obsolete Japanese bikes. I've even shipped stuff to Japan.

I eek out a living with this and computer consulting but both are growing and I will eventually have to hire help or sell of the bike biz. Anyway I'm managing to spend money on my Bug again and this is a big improvement over previous years...
