Brought another VW home today...

I ran across this in someone's signature on Samba:

"1960 VW bug/pickup conversion (junk)"

I sent him a message asking if he had pics of it. He sent me a few and I offered a trade of a tacked together rolling sand rail chassis for it,

Today, after 276 miles and 3/4 tank of diesel, the Baja Volkstruckin' project has a new home in my detached garage. Other than smelling like a dead cat, it's in much better shape than expected. Pans look good, body is straight with very little rust, and the pickup conversion looks very well done.

I may stretch the wheel base slightly by using a tube chassis to allow a bike carrier to be built in between the bed and engine, with a flat bed spare tire holder over the engine. I need to check the length of my Yamaha to see if this is feasible or not...

Other plans:

4 point cage inside 4 point on the rear, tied to the inside cage Build my 1776 back with a good set of cases Conversion to IRS Rebuild the other 002 transaxle Cut down '67 front fenders with reinforced edges

I'll upload more pics than I post here to my web site, they're available to anyone interested at:

Nice fabrication... Mine won't be that nice by any means, I plan on taking it off-road just like I do the '76. Hope I don't roll it like I did the '76 though...

I hope those pipes were wrapped before that thing was run.

Otherwise, there's an overheating problem that spells disaster.

Ah, very cool, Les. I look forward to following your progress on this project. I always liked the truck conversions done to the Beetles. I came close to buying one about 7-8 years ago. Take plenty of pictures, please.

I do tend to take a lot of pics. It's easy since I always have my cell phone, the camera on it takes decent quality pics. If I wasn't getting ready to load up and head out off-roading for the weekend, I'd be working on it already.

Heres what a customer gave me today

to keep on topic it was used as a farm truck and the prefect setup to jump start the tractor.

its a shame it really doesn't have much rust, I'm thinking I might save it the front fenders and doors were removed and stored its said to have been "running when parked"
