Bug Adventure

Today I planned to go pick up my free bug a 72 Super Beetle. I went last Saturday with my GF but didn't have the right towing equipment and some ther problems.

Had 4 problems I had to address today before even towing it. Had to install a front bumper which I got one of my 70 Regulart which I was told would fit, unlock at least on of the brakes, unlock the sterring wheel, and get the rear passager tire off and put a good one on.

I wanted to rent a auto dolley from Uhaul but they said my car (the bug) was too heavy that I would have to use a auto transport and my truck was too light for it. So I called my mechanic to borrow his super tow bar but he had lent it to someone and they never brought it back. My super tow bar hasn't come in yet. So I was stuck using my friends home made towbar that attaches to the bumper.

My friend had agred to go with me but last night he called saying he wouldn't go becuase some lady that works with us lives next door (His

40 acres joins her 40 acres) and he didn't want to see her. I assured him that we didn't have to see her. I had told her if I had problems I would tow the bug to her place to sore till I could get it and she was ok with that. But I talked him into it and hoped we would not see her as he said he would have no more faith in me if we did.

My dad got up at 3AM to goto work which he will not be home till 8PM. I got up at 3:30 AM and got ready and got to my friends house shortly after 4 am. After we loaded everything up we headed out. I stoped at Wal-mart super center in Leland, MS to get some parts for the tow bar and also in Greenwood at a parts store.

We get to where the bug is and my bumper will not fit. He says we can hook the chains to the underside. So we did that and pulled it out a litle. all 4 wheels appeared to roll. We then unhooked it and headed to tow to look for a tire place. We found one and he told us we could put a screwdriver in the ingitation and knock it out to unlock the sterring. Wewent to Dollar General for supplies. Then we tackled the sterring and finally got them unlocked. We put some fix-a-flat in the tire we couldn't get off. My friend brought he breaker bar but we broke his socket. We hooked the bug back up and headed to the tire place hoping the tire would make it that far. It didn't. Got down to the rim but we made it their. One of the other tires that I put on last week had gone flat as well. He put 2 used tired on (53.50). And we headed out. We saw smoke coming from the rear. We pulled over just off the highway and notice the front tire he changed was too big and rubing the shocks/struts. At the place we pulled over my friend spoted a auto dolley. I told him to ask the people if they would sell it. The guy didn't want to sell but if he did 500 bucks. A lady was wanting to use it as well. So I asked the guy if I could leave my bug here till I came back to get it he said ok. I then asked how much he would charge me to deliver it to my friends house. He said makie an offer and I told him to make one. he figured 75 in gas so I offered 150 and he said 175 and I said ok. He's going to try and bring it tomorrow. I'll post some pics tomorrow or Monday (That is if he can bring it that soon)

Once at my frinds house I woill figure out how to get the floor pan and extra luggage area out so a local welder can weld them in mine. Disappointed I didn't get it home today. But I didn't trust my friends tow bar and the one rubbing tire.

I know but since I had nothing in it I could afford to do that. Now if I had goten it off ebay for 100 or so then no i wouldn't have wanted to do that. But then again as far away as it was I wouldn't have bid on it on ebay. But It was free and I told the guy I would come get it. Someone before me was suppose to go get it but didn't.

Will try and post pics tomorow.

Sorry Noice I know that the aftermarket front bumpers have 2 sets of holes one for std's the other for supers, yours must be an original. You'll find you can't get the center rubber gaurd that fits, if your's is good shape you might want to find another for towing. Look at the bumper area in the wheel well before thinking abut towing useing the bumper.

Bug came today. Has a little more rust on the pans than I thought, but the area behind the back seat is in pretty good condition. Mine is rusted out so I am going to use the one off this car.
