Bug died - Again!!!!

I'm now 2 for 2 on my bug breaking down on the way home from work. The first occurance was a valve nut coming off. Luckily, I had just gotten off the highway. Yesterday, I was 1/2 mile form home.

This time she just died. I was slowed down to take a turn and she lost power. Then there was a small hesitation and then nothing. I looked in the engine compartment and I could not see any gas in the fuel filter. My first thought was clogged fuel lines, but I did just refurbish my fuel tank a few months ago. That leads me to believe it's the fuel pump. Is there a way to test the fuel pump? Can anybody else think of something else it could be? It's a '73 Super with a generator.

Don't just assume it is a fuel problem. It may or may not be. Often, nothing shows in the filter.

Pull air cleaner off. Slowly open throttle by hand. See if there is a prolonged squirt of fuel from the accel jet.

A better test is to remove the top oif the carb (5 screws). The fuel level should be (very roughly) 3/4" below the rim. Don't do this on a hot engine!!

If the carb has fuel, look for an ignition-related problem. Can be as silly as a push-on connector which has lost its tension. Go around a corner and the wires shift a hair and... BINGO- no power.

Be methodical. Don't jump to conclusions.

You might also want to check power to the coil and make sure your points are good.

A clean, new filter remains pretty much "empty" when the engine is running.

As the filter element gets dirtier, the fuel level inside the filter starts rising.

Hi All-

First of all, thanks for all your input. I isolated the problem to procrastination. The fuel delivery was fine. I cleaned the metal on the disributor cap, point, and rotor and she fired up. These were on my list of things to do this weekend before I breakdown. So I went to Autozone and picked up the necessary items and switched them out. Once got the points in, she ran really rough because the timing was off. Honestly, I'm still learning about these things, so I assume that's normal. Thanks again.

I've read things pro and con for a filter in the engine bay. I just refurbished my fuek tank this spring and I kept the filter in the engine to see how much cleaner the fuel is for this season. If things run clean, I'll take it out for next year.
