Bug headlight rings - are they supposed to be plastic?

Hi All

Slowly but surely, I am collecting items to use for later. Last week I bought headlight rings since mine are pitted. In reality, I won't use them for quite a while.

The ones I bought were described as being for a "1969 VW Bus or Bug Eyelids, Original , chrome finished , excellent condition. Very nice Hard to find in this condition with no dents. "

The ones I received, besides having cracks, are plastic ( VW partnumber

211 941 178). They look cheap and can't imagine them holding up in CT. I am pretty sure what I have on the 75 bug is metal. Were these stock in 69 or are these just cheap knockoffs?

Thanks! Remco

I'm no expert on what is original but I've owned 3 beetles and as far as I know the headlight rings were NOT plastic on any of them. I'm POSITIVE they weren't on my '63.

Thanks, guys! I didn't think so, since everything else on this car is built like a tank - hard to believe they threw this crap around the headlights.

I'll try and get my money back and use it to prowl for good ones.

They were stock items in later model german made bugs, 74 etc. in Europe. ALL OF THEM had plastic rings. And virtually all of them were cracked at the bolt hole.

Ok, Thanks guys These rings were reportedly from a 69 so they should have been metal. My 75 bug has metal so someone must have changed them along the way.

And Howard: Cool pix on your fleet! Great little cars, those minis.
