Bug: Nicest Headliner

Curious on Headliner opinion.

When restoring my 1960 bug, alot of items are viewed from an online picture. It makes it hard to really know what you like best.

My 1960 bug currently has a headliner that was indentiacl to that in my old 1971 Super Beetle. It's white perforated.. I don't really like it.

We may paint the bug (1960) Bright Red or Black.

I've seen old bugs with headliners that don't cover all the edges of the roof. Like on the outer edges is metal that they tuck under, rather than running right up next to the doors. I like them most, but don't seen any for sale. I like the gray cloth ones etc..

I've fount Nappy Cotten, and also another type Velour.. then the Vynl perforated..

What do you think is the nicest type of Headliner for a 1960?

I like the idea of a gray or black.. just don't know what would actually look good.

I had the black perforated in my 73 super, and thought it looked pretty nice. To each his own, but I think the cloth looks and lasts cheaper. The perf stuff breaths better, plus cleaning is pretty easy also. If you are going black, I would recommend the perf. I got mine at Motorworks, and it worked very nice. If you are doing yourself, then be sure you get your glue and underpadding...

My '66 has the crushed gray velour... it looks nice. But i would think the vinyl ones would clean better. But for a special look I do like the velour one better. Doesnt look as cheap.

Do you have any pics of the headliner? Does it cover the sides, and the front, or does some metal show, and it tucks under the metal?

Not to get off track to far but

My wife just did her first headliner job and it came out great even useing a cheaper universal one.

It was in a ragged out 74 super and the man just wanted anything that would make the interior better so she agreed to install it.

I have sent restoration projects to different professional upholstery shops in this area with great dissatisfaction. She has done a better job then any others that I have had done.

and she works cheap...lol

I'll have to go and take some pics... now not that my '66 is in any "real nice" condition right now.... after being under 4 feet of salt water from Hurricane Katrina... It covers the sides, if I recall, but it doesnt go under the window rubber in the front... Has metal showing in the front above the windshield.

I'll post back after I take pics...

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the shiny perf headliners... This looks too fuzzy for my taste... It's not shag or anything, but...

Personal choice. Install the headliner correctly and even an inexpensive one can look good. If you have not done this before there is a very good Cal Pacific instructional video. Included if you purchase their headliner, for sale by itself if you don't.

I have had good luck installing aluminum sided bubble wrap to the inside of the roof (before the headliner). It helps keep down the noise and makes the interior noticably more comfortable in the summer months.

I had to reinstall my headliner it wasn't that complicated at all just have to get hoops spaced properly. One thing, if you are removing headliner and there is no insulation, put it in. It's easy and makes a world of difference. Totaly worth it, so much quiter inside.

I used cutpile/foil sandwich insulation material from summit racing

If you can't find the small ones isn't it possible to just use the parts you need from the bigger headliner?? Just an idea, never done it myself.

AFAIK the cotton/cloth ones are pre '57. ie oval and split. But that might be only euro specs.
