Bug stalls a few times then doesn't start...

My 77 Bug seems to really strain when starting even after replacing the starter (approx 6 mos ago). I have a new battery. A couple of weeks ago I was driving home from a friends house, who lives about 5 miles away. I started the Bug, drove about a mile and it just stalled. Started it again a drove another mile and it stalled again. Started it a 3rd time drove another half mile and it stalled and would not start again. Called the wife with the Jeep Cherokee and tow bar...

I'm guessing the starter is bad. However, I think the stalling is either a bad vac hoes or wire. The car is a factory FI Bug.

I and pleading and asking for any ideas. Are the stalling and starting separate issues?

The starter would not cause all that stalling.

The problem could be either fuel or electrical related. The fact that it stalls after running a mile or so makes me think fuel starvation/blockage.

You may have to install a fuel pressure gauge (where the 5th injector is) to find out for sure.

After that, it's checking electrical feed to the Coil, ECU and the pump.

The 77 is F.i. in the states?

Yes. All Beetles (Std and Super) were FI beginning with the '75 models. Same year began FI for all Type 2 (Bus) here as well.

I agree with Speedy Jim, either electrical or fuel related and it ain't the starter! How new is that fuel filter? Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks at the air flow box boot. How are those ign. points. I have seen some new BOSCH ones that were not conducting electricity without getting cleaned up some. Also the ign. condenser NEEDS a good clean ground area! Make sure that the Fuel Injection wire that attaches to the ign. coil is good and tight.

I will have to ask...................................do you have gasoline in the tank? 8^)

All this, and, the coil itself could be faulty, getting hot it short circuits internaly, not common, but does happen.
