Buying a bug: what to check?

I'm looking for a bug as a daily driver. I have my '59 for the summer sunday's and i just loose the "feeling" in wintertime. I've rebuild my '59 so i know a where to look for the bad spots. However the engine is still a little mistery for me. What do i check to make sure the engine isn't worn or beyond repair. I've listened to John Muirs sounds but a lot of them sounds the same to me.

2 things:

Compression Test EndPlay Measurement

The seller may not want you to pull sparkplugs to do compression. You can get a pretty good feel for it by turning the engine by hand. There will be 2 very distinct compression strokes Per *each* revolution of the pulley.

Another helpful test is "blowby" or cyl ring leakage. With engine idling, take the oil filler cap off. Hold the palm of your hand over the opening. You should feel a gentle flutter. If you feel more than flutter, there is probably leakage.

The last you can do by "eyeball" by pushing/pulling on the pulley. The movement should be so small that you can't see it, but may feel it in your fingers. If it moves like 1/16" the case may be junque.

Try these tests on your '59.

Hey thanks Jim,

Today i went to see a '69 1300. Did your test with the endplay and compression. No endplay and indeed 2 compression strokes (one bigger than the other) What i noticed was that there was a squeeking sound coming from the generator or pully/belt. Is this an possible bearing issue or some thing as simple as worn brushes or dry belt? Also the car was very hard to start, cold ánd warm and running very rich (RPM) This ofcourse could simply be a timing issue

Well in the end i'm not buying it, we had a gap of 500,-

Squeak probably belt issue.

Just so's ya know: there are (4) compression strokes. Turn the crank pulley _2_ complete revolutions. AND.....they should ALL feel about the same. Weaker ones indicate low compression.
