Cannot get rid of hesitation

Here the situatiion, brand new 34-3 carb, push pull dixz on 1600 dual port. The advance works fine on the dix, the carb is adjusted proper as far as I can tell, but I have this annoying hesitation problem in first and second especially when the car is cold. There are no vaccuum leaks. What else could cause this problem? Someone mentioned adjusting the accel pump: how do yo do that?

Drive for mile or so. Feel manifold preheat pipe at both ends. Should burn your skin off at *both* ends of the pipe. If hot at only one end, it's not working.

You're lucky; in warm climates you can get away with no heat in manifold.

The pipe gets hot from exhaust gas being "suctioned" by one of the muffler tailpipe outlets. That's the "pigtail" tubing on the muffler. Exh gas flowing past the pigtail end creates low pressure (Bernoulli). That allows hot gas from the opposite side exh port on the head to feed into the manifold pipe.

A lot of things have to be perfect for that to work. Pipe not clogged. Pigtail end centered behind tailpipe tip. Tip inserted to correct depth to create maximum low pressure area.

For those running an aftermarket exhaust, this is a problem. Here is my attempt to remedy the situation: http://63.230.74.177/baja/page8.htmlThis didn't work. :/ The stock muffler is not an option for me without removing/reengineering the engine cage. Max

Varies by year. Bentley manual has measurements, or try experimenting.

The center core is a hefty steel pipe which carries the exhaust gases. The thin outer sheet metal only contains the heated air. If the inner core rusts out, you'll hear exhaust popping. I've seen the tips of the inner core dissolve and leak but never yet a leak inside the box. (If the tip leaks, where it connects to muffler, gas *can* get sucked into the heater box.)

Thanks, I feel a little better now. I just had the engine out and put new seals all around so if its not leaking inside the pipe I am good to go.

The only other really strange thing I notice in the bugs was that they ran water through an electrical switch. The wiper switch with the pushbutton center for the windshield wipers. That just killed me when I saw that. Even worse I tried to use it and it sprayed water all over the dash and nearby wiring when I first pushed it. Should have used all new hoses. LOL I had to try it though. LOL
