changing the pitman arm

Hammering is a good thing! The tie rod end shaft is tapered and can be very tight in the Pitman arm. Hold the head of a heavy hammer (sledge hammer) against one side of the Pitman arm end. Strike the other side with a second hammer. Often, that will start loosening it.

(BTW, when done properly with the pitman arm the tie rod end shaft will just pop right out. At least in my experience.)

I'm there too............................I have done the pipe thing too. The Pitman arm is most common in my life though.

hi I'm changing the steering box in my 72SB and I find very dificult to remove the pitman arm from the center tie-rod, I assume that after the castellated nut I just have to pull with a 2-jaw puller, right? here is where I have dificulties since the 2-jaw puller slips all the time. Is brute force the only way here? I really feel like hammering the thing to death, but I guess that's not the proper way.....
