You get the idea.
So -- is there some means to lube this thing, or do wiser men and women just replace 'em.

First try to re-route it. Down at the front wheel, reach around behind and pull all the slack out of the cable (from the wheel attachment) then poke it back and pull it again, finally compromising at about half the slack taken out. Make sure there are no tight bends (sometimes they just "settle in") and finally, right up behind the speedometer, pull a little slack from below and re-aim how it aligns to the back of the speedometer. If you want to lube it, you can unscrew it from the speedometer and work it around until you have that end out where you can actually reach and see it - the "people side" of the dashboard... Pull outward on the innercable and then spray your lube of choice, a little at a time, into the tube. A lock spray with graphite in a solvent suspension will prolly work best. I use LPS1 cuz that's what I have and it lasts pretty well. Before too much time goes by, buy a new one and carry it with you. -BH

Are you 100% positive it's the cable?
Disconnect the cable from the Speedo for a short drive and make sure it is. If it is, while it's disconnected, I'll recommend some white silicone lube squished into the cable housing from whichever end allows the most "room" to work it in.
If it's the speedo, it's time for some more study and experimentation on the saunabus...............remove speedo, and start trying to figuree out how to take it apart and CLEAN it really well, and then lube the main frame, and shaft with Mobile 1 motor oil. the gears inside, I'd recommend a spray silcone, but you really have to be careful not to destroy the surfaces that are readable. You know, the pseedo face, the ODO wheels,.............the white paint and such, will just wash right off of some of them and you should maybe do a test on some part that won't annoy you while you are looking at the finished product. I never had any of the VDO speedos, need much more than a cleaning and lube, other than those whose odometers had stopped keeping mileage.................(wheels of odo slipping on axel, when they should be fastened snugly)
There's a speedo shop in the southern california area that does work on those speedos, called................United Speedometer Service

Uh, now that you bring it up, I wonder why it never occurred to me that it might be the speedo and not the cable that has a criket in it. Hmm. Thanks for the advice on how to determine and what works.
I had once the squee squee squee..... and then it broke. Probably the noise comes from some bad bend of the speedo cable, which means that if you continue like this, it will break soon. Try to remove it and re-install it. Also put some lube inside.

First hose the speedo cable down with silicone lubricant. That fixes things for most people.. just unscrew the cable behind the speedo,
30 second job.If you do end up opening the speedo, hopefully this will help a bit:
Right now the speedo-cable bone is no longer connected to the speedo bone. No squee-squee-squee. Will drive it like this for a few days to confirm. Will then flush a bunch of Teflon-bearing silicone-based white grease adult lube compound (just kidding, will use something appropriate) down the cable until it cries like a little girl then re-connect it nice and straight and see what happens. If squee-squee-squee returns, I will consider more aggressive means.
