Door won't open

Hi all,

I'm having trouble with the drivers-side doorlock. It's getting more difficult to open the door from the outside. I think it all started when i had to adjust the door real tight to make the doorrubber seal water tight. I could feel the resistant in the doorhandle when opening the door. Now it sometimes refuses to open at all and there is sometimes no resistant at all in the doorhandle.

Is there a way to fix this problem without taking the doorhandle out? Or is there a link out there whith a nice blowout picture/drawing or something? It's a 1200 beetle '59.

Thanks in advance, Roger

If there's no resistance in the outside door handle (flops around) it sounds like the latch is pushed in. It sounds like you tightened it a wee bit too much and the door latch isn't dropping in to the catch on the door post all the way. The inside door handle usually seems to have a longer pull and it's probably able to pull the latch in just enough further to get it open. Not sure how you might get the outside handle to have more pull. You may have to loosen it back up a bit so it catches better. (which will probably leave you with your gasket leak again...) Bad door alignment?

Hey Mike,

thanks for your input. It answers most of the questions. I already loosened it a bit (last year... first time it happened) I think you might be spot on mentioning the difference between the inside and outside handle. I oiled the latch a bit, but there is also a latch on the B-pillar with a black adjustable piece of plastic (or backelite?). Any ideas on that part? What do i adjust when i adjust it?

again, thanks for your ideas, Roger

When I pull the outside door handle on my '55 all the way the door latch still sticks out maybe 4-5mm. When I reach around and grab the inside door handle the latch pulls in all the way. I've haven't gotten to the door restoration part of my project yet so I'm not sure how the two mechanisms are tied together inside the door. Sorry I can't help with that.

Very simple, remove the outside handle, and you will see the relationship... It is only a manual lever actuating a "striker"(that is not the right word, I KNOW!) plate. Any wear on the outside lever, wrong spacing(rubber gasket?) etc can /will scr..(naah, cant say that).Fec..(Naaah, cant say that either), hell one is a polite son of a mother right??

Hey Jørn,

Indeed sounds very simple, BUT (there is always a but) the paint is painted on so thick that it was very hard to push the door handle in and tucked up the paint a little. Removing the handle will damage the paint for sure :( You see my delemma? However this winter i have to strip the bug anyway due to a bubling paint.... so i might give it a (reluctant) go. Do you hapen to know how or/and whatfor there are adjusting screws in the B pillar Lats?

Cheers Roger

That is for the striker plate latch to lock into (The proper striker plate this time). I@m not shure I understand what you inquire about could you give me more details?

The plate(striker) is adjustable up and down, this is to match the door mechanism which will move with time(The whole door will sag), but mostly in and out on the pillar to allow for close fit on the rubber gasket that goes around the door.(This will disfigure and harden/shrink) Both of these(as mentioned) will give during the years, therefore the adjustment ..

I think you just did ;) Thanks.

My idea of adjusting the door was was to unscrew the 2(?) screws on the B-pillar and move the plate to adjust the hight and depth of the door.

Just to be sure we are talking about the same thing: on

formatting link
in the left navigator there is a section 'parts'. Groupnumber 77, part 13 is the part i'm refering to (plastic?, bakelite?) I know mine is not a super but at least you know what i'm rambling about..

Are there sections explaining how to adjust them? I'm still not happy with removing the outer doorhandle.. :( Thanks again, Roger

Just a guide block to take up the little miss-alignment you would always have..

Perhaps someone else cold give you a better low down..
