Engine keeps running

Hi RAMVA!!! I know I've heard the answer to this very same question, but as it has never happened to me, I didn't pay attention.

A few minutes ago me and a friend just came home, and realized that after turning off the car ('72 STD brazilian), with the headlight switch ON, the car keeps running. even after the key has been removed. probably the headlight switch is grounded somewhere. Where should I look?

Thanks for your help.

US cars that year had a separate contact inside the Ignition switch which controlled the headlights. Lights are OFF if the key is Off or in the Start position.

If that contact in the Igntion switch is somehow crossed to the Coil contact, you could get the effect you are seeing.

If yours has that arrangement, look for a Blk/Yell wire from Ignition to Headlight switch.

Thanks Jim. The brazilian '72 is practically identical to a US '68. I'll check that tomorrow, but I'll have to check all wires of the ignition switch since it seems a previous owner liked to use his own personal wiring color codes throughout the car.
