Engine Lid Spring Trick

Hi, I just put my Bug back together after a bit of a lay-up. One things baffled me. What's the trick for putting the spring back on the deck lid? (Or hood, bonnet, whatever)

I know I have done it before but this time all I can come up with is to install it pre-compressed with some big heavyduty cable ties, but there must be an easier way.

Thanks, Harry

Remove all bolts on one hinge, remove all but one on the other hinge. You can now insert the spring and easily swing the lid back in place.

tape the lid top corners to avoid paint chipping

Ah yes, thanks, that worked well. I still wonder how I did it before.

On a related note, I have thought about getting the "easy off" removable hinge pins from ACN, but it seems like you would still have the spring to deal with. Anybody have them? How's it work out in the real world?

Peace, Harry

I would only use "easy off" related to racing or experimental work requiring frequent engine swaps, hence no spring needed.

What's the trick for putting the spring back on the deck

I have a painted stock deck lid spring. I use a pair of channel lock pliers to get it back on.

Didn't know they existed commercially. Years ago I made my own. I knocked the stock pins out and replaced them with scissors (?) type pins. Nowadays I would probably use what ac.net sells, I know they have a safety catch type of deal that prevents them from backing out.

Stock spring can still be used. Just need to push the lid on evenly against the spring, until the hinge pin holes line up. Then put the pins in. A friend would be a big help, it's a 3.7 hand job. :)

I bought a pair of those from aircooled.net or cip1.com. Right after that i saw the same pin/clip in the hardware section at a Lowe's.

Thanks to everyone who replied. As rarely as I remove the hood the quick release pins don't make much sense for me, it's just one of those things you see and go "Huh, that's clever."

Peace, Harry
