Engine Stand question

Hi All I will need to do some work on a 72 bug and was wondering what kind of engine stand to use. I've seen those things you mount onto a desk, but I'd like to roll the engine out of the way when it is not being worked on. Could one of those JCWitney stand be used or do I need something very specific to VWs to work on this? Thanks! Remco

LOL Look on my web site for the ultimate in cheapy roll around engine stands (Mechanical section). Come winter, it can be used for firewood!

the problem with the V8 stands is they use four mounting blots...this poses a problem whn it copmes time to split the case. If you buy one you will aslo nee d to get or make and adapter for the VW engine to best serve your needs. After alll is said and done you will likely not be much cheaper than just buying a VW specific stand. If you allready have the other kind by all means adapt away...but if buying new...

Aircooled's engine stand does fit and it is sturdy enough to do the job. I like using it, but it has a problem in that it interferes with mounting the firewall engine tin. I had to mount the engine away from the stand by using longer bolts and bits of copper tubing as spacers in order to get clearance to mount the firewall. And with only two mounting points, it's not a real secure setup that way. If John C knows of a cool way to bolt the stand directly to the engine while providing firewall clearance, I'm all ears.

Other than that little issue, I can recommend this stand.

...perhaps mount that one last piece of tin after you take the engine off the stand??

...just a thought.

Well, okay, YMMV and all that. I have creaky old knees (one is metal, believe it or not) with limited range of motion and prefer to work on things at waist height.

...me too...except for the metal and old part...lol...but they are very creaky (was supposed to have othroscopic surgery over 10 years ago) thats why I final mantle it on the bucket....ya see I sit on anothe r bucket and for me its much more comfortabl;e to work sitting down than bending my neck over something at waist height but I do understand your point...you *do* have the stand for assembly purposes. And, as such, would like to fully assemble the project before removing it from said stand. I trust the squirrlel engenuity will eventually win out and you will design a solution with a sketch pad and yer trusty #2 ticondaroga instrument of limited destruction....maybe this is just a perfect excuse for that manly welder

I recommend the specific one for the air cooled VWs and 4cyl Porsche engines. It makes life simpler, but as someone noted you should remove the front cooling tin. I have a new Universal engine stand that I bought for my Jeep V8 engine and it will not hold the weight. If you are close to chicago you can basically have this stand and then buy the bench VW stand and have both!

I just have too many engine stands (5-6) now and a couple need to go!!!! I am keeping my VW specific stand though!

Appreciate all the information; it seems like a VW mount is the best way to go. I also like the home made suggestion. Since that can be quickly and inexpensively tried, that's what I'll try first.

(and thanks Dave for the offer, but like my toes too much to have an engine fall on it. I am in CT, but if I were near Chicago, I would like to check out your engine handy work, though )
