Feels like engine is bouncing but its not..

Bought a 68 bug....still has sway bar.. New shocks...Tranny and engine mounts are solid If i hit a bump on the left rear it feels like the whole body or engine bounces terribly....That fender does have fresh marks on it behind the bumper Had a Very good VW customizer check it out..he has no idea why it makes the loud bumping noise Anyone have any clue or experience that might help me out here? Thanks paul

...are the rubber pieces on the camber compensator in good shape? How about your torsion bushings? Usually both items are worn out completely....maybe even trailing arm bushing...though it normally survives alittle better. Cheak and replace any or all that are worn....even if it does not solve your problem the car will ride much better.

take a peek into your wheelwell...there is a bodymount in there....your rubber pad between the body and chassis mounting points may have dry rotted and fallen out...heck someone may have removed the thing in the past and never even put abolt in there....can cause a terrible noise....if you need a picture look here on Dragenwagen's site...the mount is to the front of the wheelwell....(easy to see witout wheel and pan in the way)

Hi Paul,

Maybe the shock has failed. If it's the shock, the spring plate and torsion bar keep the car up and maintainin its correct posture, just that when you hit a bump, there is nothing to absorb the 'shock', this will give a loud clunking as the spring plate 'bottoms out both at the top and the bottom of its travel. Try swapping the shock from the other side, and check those tranny/engine mount by jacking up the oil strainer plate on the motor and seeing if it lifts off the frame horn. If all this is ok, then the problem is probably a broken torsion bar. Not a common problem but does happen.

Check the body-to-chassis bolts in the rear, there's a hidden one in the rear fenderwell, just to the front of the wheel if I remember correctly. Could be it. It's often hidden under a pile of dirt, as it sits in a recess. Bolt goes in from above, screws into a support "tower". Sorry, I don't have pictures handy.

It could also be your tranny mounts loosening up or broken off?
