FS: 1966 VW Bug Original

Gas prices high? Here's a chance to save at the pumps. This car has lived it's whole life in San Jose, California. It was purchased on May 3, 1966 at Spartan Volkswagen in San Jose, and has never been out of the state. It has 76,446 original miles, has the current registration and carries the California black and yellow license plates which are in excellent condition. It retains the original 1300 engine and transmission, and purrs like a kitten. Great mileage with the 1300 engine. I am the 2nd owner, as the 1st owner also lives in San Jose. I have most of the registration cards and service records from 1966 to the present. The car has always been garaged, with no rust. I had a new clutch put in using OEM parts and also a new 6v battery, everything else is pretty much original. Tune-ups and oil changes were always performed on schedule. Original paint looks beautiful and is still very shiny since it's always been garaged. It has a rip in the driver's seat, I was going to cover it, but then it wouldn't be original, so I'll let the buyer deal with it. No rips in the headliner, AM radio. The car runs like a dream, and can be used as a daily driver. You'll have to see to appreciate the originality. I really hate to sell it, but my son is off to college. See link for price and pics.

Tom, that is a great looking car with history. I know you are proud of the car but how much do you have to get out of it? Dennis

Very nice. It would look good sitting next to my all original white '64 that's in similar condition. Just don't have the room. That's the way it goes sometimes.

It's a shame you had to sell it Tom! And it's just a month or two older than my '66.

I am sure you will be back before long, with another '66? heh I'll keep watching!

Thanks Howard for the kind words, and I'm glad your '66 is fixed like new. Yes, I hated to sell it, but the gas prices are high here, over $3.00 a gal, but that's not the killer, it's the auto insurance for a teen, and to insure three cars compared to two. I can put my son on hold (stand-by) while he attends Stanford Univ., and save $800 a year, plus eliminating a car to insure takes the price way down. I'm also a cyclist, so I will commute by bicycle in the future. No car, but also no DMV, no gas, no insurance, no registration fees, and no smog.

I'm glad you got it sold right way. I have a soft spot for certain year vw's and that was one of them.

You are lucky! Only 3 cars to insure... and only $800/yr for your college aged son? Wow! I insure the cars listed below and would be happy with $800 every 6 months per driver for my eldest son, anyway. At least my bug is liability only and $600/yr.

Yea, my friends are in the same boat, seems like they're working to pay for auto insurance for their kids. Not me, I figure why pay the insurance on three cars if were only going to drive two? State Farm has a college hold, but darn we didn't qualify because you have to be at least 100 miles away, and my son will be attending Stanford Univ, which is only 30 miles away.

I love riding the bike to commute with today's gas prices and not having to pay any insurance or DMV charges.

My bug insurance is 51 euros /yr, because it is a car with more then 25 years and I have a second insurance on other car 320 Euros /yr
