Gas pedal assy question

Finally am biting the bullet and fixing my sticking gas pedal. MAUDIB was nice enough to stop by a few weeks ago on some other VW business and also took a look at the pedal. He found that the reason it was sticking down was because it had lateral play and, when all the way down, would kick over to the right about 1/2" (at the top). So today I tightened up the hinge on the pedal bottom and now it will not match up with the pivot guide.

OK. I believe pedal assemblies have changed from year to year, so let me describe it to you.

The accel cable comes out the tube and hooks over a shaft connected by an arm to the back of the pedal.

The shaft upon which the accel cable connects first goes through a hole in this pivoting guide arm that comes from the block of the clutch/brake pedal assembly.

Now that the accel pedal is fixed and does not slop side to side, it sits about 3/4" to the left of the hole in this pivoting guide arm. The arm seems fixed in the brake/clutch assembly, and it comes up, angles to the right (towards the tunnel), and then angles straight up again. (see crude illustration, below)
