Gear shifting problem

On my camper it´s impossible to get first and second gear, the first will not go in and the second always pops in reverse. However, the coupler is fine. Any suggestions? I do see an oil leak around the coupler, do i have a serious gearbox problem or is it something stupid?

Coupler might look okay, but it could be "tired" and soft. There are guide bushings (kind of) in the pipe the shift rod goes through, too. They don't go bad as often as the one in a beetle does, though.

There's one shift rod bushing still that CAN wear too far, not sure which year it changed but it was right at the end of the shift rod, under the shifter. (On the underside of the car).

The shifter base may just need adjustment.

or maybe someone got mad at it for being misaligned and not changing properly, and they used force... which bent the selector forks inside the transmission. Hope not, it's a big job getting them lined up again.

Jan is right about the bushing up front. Remove the splash panel underneath and you can see where the shift rod ends. The bushing must have a tight fit or else the rod will wobble about.

There is *one more* bushing which can wear. Unfortunately, it is *inside* the tranny. It is a spherical ball which transfers the rod motion to the selectors. When worn out, the round hole in the ball becomes egg-shaped.
