Grease for use in rust prevention - good idea or not?

Well, I've been derusting, cutting and welding new steel and will soon get to the point where it all needs to be repainted. With the weather becoming warmer in a month or so, timing will be very good.

I'll repaint with RustBullet and after was wondering whether to coat everything one the inside of my tunnel/framehead with grease. I'll use some disgustingly thick axle grease, glob it to the inside, heat it up with a heatgun and just spread it out with a brush. I've been reading up on restoration and picked that tip up from an old school restoration book. After that's all done, I'll weld the new bottom plate to the frame head, and try to hit it again with a brush with grease from the inspection hole.

Before I commit, is there any good reason to not do it?

Remco, i'd think summer temperatures would, at the least, cause a bad odor in the car......heavy grease usually has a heavy smell..

Citroen people coat their double hull

dry out. In time that grease may get

Thanks, Ben. That looks like the ticket! I'll try to order some tomorrow but could probably pick some up in NY if I have to.

I hear both reservations of Chris and Mario too. Putting grease in inaccessible spots was something I read about in a restoration manual. Good point: didn't think of the smell.. Not sure if synthetic grease is flammable, but I wouldn't want to find out the hard way! :)

Sure am glad I asked the question here, guys! Thanks for the info and sanity check - I'll use fluid film instead.
