Group opinion?

There is a 69 at the wrecker's yard that runs, but it's been in a wreck. The front driver's side fender is totaled, the frame underneath is cracked in front in one spot. The rear fender is also pretty badly beat up. Looks like he was hit in front to one side and spun around a bit. Motor runs, and has been rebuilt fairly recently, underside appears fairly clean. Looks pretty stock, except the driver's front seat has been replaced. The odo is in 20,000's, we figure it's been turned over once. It has a sunroof and appears to be a stock 1600 4 speed for '69. The back end is backed up against the fence, which faces the highway, so I got to see the engine a little but didn't get the engine number. Did get the VIN. It's a nice Prussian Blue or some color like that. I don't have my Original VW Beetle book around to check the colors and when in the year it was made. It's about halfway through the 69 year from the looks of the VIN if I remember correctly.

Is $600 too much to pay for this?

PS. The color appears to be Cobalt Blue, per the SAMBA listing of 69 colors.

My opinion: If the axle beam has been bent (I guess that's what you were implying), $600 is a lot.

Will the yard be giving you a "Salvage Title" ? Likely. That can be a drawback down the road. I would want to research the VIN further in any event.

'69 was SP 1500, BTW.

That's right, the type 1 didn't go to 1600cc until 1970.

The title is a regular title, according to the owner, but I haven't seen it yet. I forgot that just because the 67 was 1500 - 6v that the 68 and 69 were 1500 - 12v. I'm not yet sure what shape the front torsion bars, but I'm told it's drivable. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Go easy on the voltage analasys(SP?), you forget the VW was a world wide thing, you could get 6V much much later than -69....

My mother had a 63/64 with semaphores.....

Although I fully understand they are few and far between in The U.S. BUT they do exist!!

Ah. If the sale would be thru the actual owner, that may be a brighter situation.

(I shouldn't nit-pick, but '67 was 12V in US :-)

Actually the owner signed it over to the junk yard and the junk yard doesn't junk the title if it can actually sell the car as running.

Ok well I know you may be wanting a professional opinion. But heres mine HAGGLE. GET THAT TITLE DOWN TO $400. I have 2 bugs i've been working on for a year and I was able to get them for free just because I was willing to use the word.

If the salvage guy is a nice guy just say ... how about 400 because of the paperwork. or how about 450..?? and just ask. shrug. I'm thinking

600 is a solid asking price but I think it's low blue book.

shrug

Found out the yard is involved in an ongoing investigation by Mr. Hoover's boys. And we're not talking Bob Hoover, either. Notwithstanding that air-cooleds tend to run a bit hotter, I don't want a 'hot' car if you know what I mean.

I know a little bit about air-cooled engines. Until I was a senior in high school, we owned an air-cooled Corvair. 2600 lbs and 80 hp, minus the power wasted in the Powerglide transmission. I think one of the splitties could beat it off the line and in the quarter mile, and probably the half, too.
